voyage through image
audio-performance, july 2024
Home of Sound, Lviv, Ukraine; online
As a part of the sound-exhibition “As for now, it is quiet” in the frame of “Sound experiences of war” project, Bohdana has performed a live audio piece “voyage through images” which was streamed in the gallery Home of Sound (Дім звуку) in Lviv, Ukraine, and online worldwide.
Note for the listeners:
I’ve been asking myself, what could possibly my sound experience of war be when I am so often so far away? Do I even have the right to interfere with this soundscape from such a distance? For me, sound is about physical presence. My presence in recent years has been mediated by texts, images and languages.
I am translating live from French into Ukrainian an interview entitled “Images, voyages, vingt ans après”, which the photographer and film director Raymond Depardon gave to Jean-François Chevrier in 1998 in Paris. I’m weaving my memories of family photos that remained in albums in Kyiv or for various reasons disappeared long ago into the translation. For the listeners’ audio navigation, I separate the translation from memories by pouring water between two glasses.
You can read-remember with me from beginning to end, or you can open it like a book in a shop, in a random place, read a few lines and put it back on the shelf.
Approximate duration of reading-remembering: 2 hours
