Sharing similar colonial past in relation to Soviet Union and Russian Empire, Ukrainian artist Bohdana Korohod and Estonian performer Maria Paiste both were obliged to spend extensive school-time learning Russian literature. Both were particularly attached to the character of a young actress from the play “The Seagull”. And only as adults and in conversation with each other were they able to recognize the misogynistic and victimizing representation of a female artist along the call to endure suffering as a person’s natural condition.
In a series of conversations and exercises the two artists were trying to tackle the double consciousness that arises from being in the position of the oppressed. By doing that they were recording their dialogues and tracking the change towards more self-aware persons claiming their rights for happiness and respect.
The script of the short film is based entirely on those discussions.
